Off to Canada!

I'm leaving today to go to the Canadian Open in Toronto!  I'll play pair go with Pete Schumer and then play in the main Canadian Open tournament as well.  I am so not ready for this.  My head is full of t-shirts and tote bags and pamphlets for the Congress.  But I'll be assistant tournament director for the US Open, so I won't get to play then, so this is my chance and I'm taking it.  (Unlike the "golden chance" that I missed in the game below...)

I'll also spend a couple of days in Montreal with Guo Juan after the Canadian Open.  It's been a long time since I've been to Montreal and I'm really looking forward to the visit.  Hopefully I'll manage to keep up with my Congress purchasing & planning while I'm away. (We're now on track to have about 650 attendees! If we really get that many, we'll totally blow away the past record attendance of 518 in NYC.)

Meanwhile, my reporting on my EYD games has totally been Congressed.  I did manage to stay in B league, finishing up with a 2-3 record in the June round.  I'm now 1-2 in the July round.  In the game below (game 3 of June round), I lost by resignation.  I did manage to beat the same person in game 1 of the July round, though!  Some day I'll get around to posting the review of that and my game 5 of the June round.  I also already lost games 2 and 3 of the July round, but haven't gotten reviews of those yet.

Dragon Boat Festival

We had a Go table at the Dragon Boat Festival yesterday.

We've been doing this for many years, starting before I lived in Boston the first time.  As far as I know, we've only ever gained one regular club member from the Dragon Boat Festivals over the many years we've been going there, but that player is Mr. Cho, so it's totally worthwhile.

We had tons of people stopping by to play and learn yesterday.  I was only able to get a moment to take these photos after things had calmed down quite a bit.  We had lots of beginners, quite a few people who play regularly online who didn't know about our club, and a bevy of people who came up and said "we know how to play!" and would then play connect 5 with each other.

We had 40 mph gusts of wind yesterday so, if your game wasn't going well, you could just wait until the wind picked up again and blew your stones off the board.

EYD June 4th Round

I won my June 4th round game in EYD.  I made a mistake in the beginning, which gave White a clear advantage.  But then my opponent made a big mistake and the game turned in my favor.  I was able to hold on to that lead.  Here it is, with variations and comments from In-seong:

I lost my 3rd round game, which I played after my 4th round game, but In-seong hasn't done the review of that one yet.  I'll post the game after I get the review.

We only have one game left in the June session.  This last round will determine whether I stay in B League or move back down to C League for the July session.  I think my opponent will be tough to beat.

Meanwhile, Walther and I continued the dan level class last Thursday (that's right, just me and Walther again), studying the first of the incredible run of Nie Weiping's supermatch games and also a recent crazy Ke Jie game.  I really like this format of memorizing and preparing an old classic game and then studying a new game that Walther brings.  Memorizing pro games is a really good way to learn and those classic games have a lot in them that is applicable to our own games.  But then we play "guess the next move" with the new games that I haven't seen before, which is a lot of fun.  It's gratifying when I can get the moves right and really wonderful when they play moves I never would have considered.

busy busy busy

The plan was to spend all my summer time on playing & studying Go, but someone decided that we should host the US Go Congress this summer.  So we in the MGA are busy getting ready for this 500 person event (or maybe even 600 -- we're on track to break the record attendance of 518).  I was recently put in charge of all the merchandise, so I'm busy preparing lots of swag with our logo on it.

There might also be some running chickens.

Meanwhile, I am still playing and studying.  I'm learning so much in EYD, but that means I'm trying out lots of new things and definitely not always doing them well.  Here's my most recent game:

I'm currently 1-1 in the B league. I lost the game shown above. The game before that I won because my opponent was having trouble with his computer repeatedly rebooting, so he resigned instead of finishing the game -- not exactly a glorious win for me. I was supposed to play game 3 yesterday, but my opponent was playing in a tournament this weekend, so I'll play 2 games this coming week (my regular game on Tuesday, and a make-up game later in the week).

In our dan-level class, attendance and preparation have been deteriorating.  Last time it was just Walther and me and I had done more preparation (even though he's running the class).  Actually, it was really nice because we could really go over things in a lot more detail, instead of having tons of people jumping all over the place.  We finished the series of games we started studying, so Walther said I could pick the next game(s).  On Guo Juan's recommendation, I selected the incredible run of wins by Nie Weiping in the Japan-China Supergo games.  He won eleven of these title matches in a row, securing wins for China in the first three of the Supermatches.  We're going to review the first of these wins this coming Thursday.
