Go Camp, Continued

Yesterday we had a regular league game.  I played Nick Prince, from Canada.

I lost on time, which is totally unacceptable.  Part of the problem was that my clock was in Japanese, which I didn't pay attention to until I was in byo-yomi.  I thought it would be ok, but apparently I completely tune out the Japanese counting.  When I lost, I had absolutely no idea that I had used *any* of my byo-yomi periods, much less that I was on my last period.  But the bigger problem was that I had used *way* too much time earlier in the game.  I've been feeling distracted and unfocused lately.  It's hard to know what to do about that.

Here's the game, with some comments by Daiki Komatsu, who was the pro who gave the afternoon lecture.

Komatsu-sensei talked about one of the AlphaGo games. (He said it's not technically a review, since AlphaGo is too strong and we don't really understand.)

I won some Go-themed mochi by guessing AlphaGo's move at one point in the game.

I got to play a simul game against Komatsu-sensei in the afternoon.

Yesterday, Ohara-san wore his Boston Congress shirt!

Last week, he realized that he had played Joel Sanet at the Congress last year.  Joel is here this year (and is also a regular AYD member).

Today we had a friendship match with some local Japanese players.  My first game was with Yasunori Fukami.

I went to lunch with him, his father (a 6d who reviewed our game for us), his sister, and a couple of other friends.  We went to the chain Italian place around the corner.  I had pizza.  :)

Yasu is 3d, so I took black with no komi.  After my game with Nick, I carefully made sure my side of the clock was in English.  But White gets to choose which side the clock is on.  He picked it up and moved it to the other side of the board, and I didn't think to swap the languages.  So my byo-yomi was in Japanese again!  I managed ok this time though.

It was a bloody game, in which we both lost huge groups.  In the end, I won by 8 points.

My afternoon game was with Toru Yuasa, 5d.

When Fukami-san (father of Yasu) asked me about the game later and I told him who I had played, he said, "Oh, gentleman."  And he was indeed a gentleman, as you can see from his playing style.

I also got in one more friendly game with this 5 dan:

We played even, no komi, and I lost, but it was a fun game and I learned some things.

It was a busy day at the TTS center, with lots of people around.

We went out to our favorite local izakaya place afterward for a post-friendship-match party.  We learned that Kitagawa-san (one of our new friends) was a "paper driver" -- she has a license, but doesn't actually drive.  Fukami-san was declared the "mood maker".  He likes to give people nicknames and decided this university student (who apparently just joined us for the party even though he didn't make it for the games) looks like Ichiro (who I guess is a baseball player).

When we left for the evening, the owner said, "see you next week!"  :)  She also calls Maeda-sensei, "Maeda-sensei", which I love.

Today we're off to Kyoto for our overnight cultural trip.
